8.17.03 Joaquin Fuster is a primate vivisector at UCLA who has made a lifelong career of abusing animals. His current experiments on primates involve strapping primates down in restraint devices and depriving them of water for 22 hours of the day - and the remaining 2 hours they are only given 350 mL! On Monday, August 4th, during the FARM's annual AR2003 conference in Los Angeles, around 100 activists from around the country assembled at the sidewalk in front of the home of Dr. Joaquin Fuster for a solemn candlelight vigil. Dr. Fuster knew of our vigil ahead of time, and was not very pleased. He did everything in his power to intimidate us out of exercising our First Amendment rights and exposing his animal abuse to the media and his neighbors. He even went so far to email individual attendees of the demonstration and drop his propaganda in the mailbox of every single neighbor in the surrounding area. Last Chance for Animals showed up for the demonstration with their "Animals News Van" showing video footage of animal experimentation. Almost all neighbors were supportive of our vigil once we educated them about the animal abuse Dr. Fuster is involved in. Several neighbors joined our vigil and brought their entire family. One neighbor even opened up her bathroom for the demonstrator's use. Sustained local pressure is already underway against Dr. Fuster and his barbaric experiments. Another demonstration at his home is scheduled for this Tuesday, August 19th. Please get in touch with the UCLA Primate Freedom Project for more information on this protest. Also, the home of Dr. Fuster is now a scheduled stop for the 2005 Primate Freedom Tour. This is only a taste of what the vivisection community will see at the 2005 Primate Freedom Tour. Please, get involved in one way or another in the Tour's efforts if you can. If you plan on making it to the Tour, please feel free to email Dr. Fuster at joaquinf@ucla.edu and tell him you look forward to visiting him in 2005! Special thanks to LCA for their appearance with the Animal News Van, Rachel Luna for the photographs, and the neighbors of Dr. Fuster.
