According to the United States Department of Agriculture, over 50,000 primates are used in experimental procedures in the U.S. each year. Research methods today include eyelid suturing of infants, food and water deprivation, and experimental brain surgeries to affect emotion. Monkeys are routinely strapped into chairs to allow scientist to experiment on them while they are fully conscious. The list of experimental abuses is endless. Outside of experimental procedure, the suffering is also widespread. Isolation is severely stressful to primates. Ten percent of isolated primates are so severely stressed that they self-mutilate. Documentation from University of Wisconsin shows that 1/3 of the animals that die at UW are suffering from digestive tract pathologies brought on by chronic stress. Exploitive primate research has consumed hundreds of millions in American tax dollars while it has contributed very little to human welfare. It has diverted funding from non-animal research technology that could have been more productive, and from social programs - such as drug rehabilitation, prenatal care, and nutrition education - that could have benefited directly and indirectly, the majority of the population. The time to speak out is now. Acquiescence helps the tormentor, not the tormented. You can help make the Tour a reality.
